Manually Adding a Modem in Windows XP

4. Click the "Control Panel" menu. This will open the Control Panel which is an area where much of the Windows system and hardware setup can be controlled.

6. Click the "Modems" tab then click on "add".

7. Click the "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list" box
8. Click "next"

9. Click the "have disk" button if you have a driver disk for your modem. If you do not have the driver disk then select one of the "Standard Modems" from the list that matches the speed of your modem. Then go to Step 14

10. Click "browse".

11. Browse to the folder of your modem type or model. An ".inf" will be highlighted. Click the "Open" button
Note that you may have different folders on your CD to the ones displayed.
12. Click the "OK" button.

13. Select the modem model and then click "next".

14. Select the correct Communications Port. If the modem is an external modem it will usually be either com1 or com2. If the mouse has a 9 pin connector then it will probably be on com1 so use com2 for the modem. If the mouse has a small, round, (PS2) connector, then you should be able to choose either com port, just ensure the modem is physically plugged into the one you choose. Internal modems should be detected by Windows ME when it starts so they should already be assigned to a port.

15. The modem is now installed. Click "Finish"

16. The Modem installation is complete. Click "OK"
