THE GALLERY SOCIETY

Since it was formed in 1986, The Toowoomba Gallery Society Incorporated has been the Gallery's major community support organisation. Initially the main focus was to help in the effort to gain a new purpose-built gallery, to enable the return of the Lionel Lindsay Collection to Toowoomba. Some of the various other activities of the organisation have included curating exhibitions, holding workshops, organising visits to artists studios, and holding fund raising social activities.

In 1989, the vision of the Contemporary Wearables Jewellery Awards was that of Sonia Richards, Society Treasurer at the time. Sonia and the committee, through careful planning, lay the foundations for this successful event. Their careful selection of invited artists/craftsmen and wise choice of judges were but some of the ingredients ensuring ultimate success. After the success of the first two awards, the Society persuaded the Toowoomba City Council to adopt a jewellery acquisitions policy. In addition to the purchase of jewellery from the Award Exhibition, the Society has acquired and donated to the Gallery, pieces of historical interest to complement the collection. In recent years the Society has provided the entire prize money for the Awards.

The Gallery Society opened The Gallery Shop in 1994 when the new Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery was built. This venture is entirely run by volunteers, raising money for acquisitions and funding for Contemporary Wearables. In addition to being a fund raising venture, it provides an attractive outlet for local artists and craftsmen.

Aims of the Gallery society include:

* Stimulate and sustain public interest in The Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery and its activities.
* Extend the Gallery's influence in the community and surrounding regions.
* To co-operate with the Toowoomba City Council in building up the Gallery's Collection.
* To foster the practice of study and appreciation of the arts in the community and surrounding regions.
* To provide for its members special facilities for the study and enjoyment of arts.
* To assist the Gallery management when required.
* To generate funds from various sources to be used for Gallery acquisitions and other appropriate Gallery activities.
